1962 Sam Cooke – Having A Party
In 1962, Sam Cooke wrote several songs while touring. He contacted producers Hugo & Luigi and arranger René Hall, and they set up a recording session in Los Angeles.
Sam had written both songs for the upcoming single. They recorded Having A Party first, in a session that by all reports became a party.
The single reached #17 on the Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B chart. The song remained Sam’s closing number for all his concerts until his untimely death in 1964.
Meanwhile, the b-side of the single attracted even more attention. Sam wrote Bring It On Home To Me and Hugo & Luigi also produced that side of the record immediately after finishing the a-side.
The b-side of the single reached #13 on the Hot 100 and #2 on the R&B chart.
That side of the record grew to be far more influential and attracted numerous cover versions, including versions by different artists that reached the top ten on the pop, R&B, and Country charts.
The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has included Bring It On Home To Me on its list of 500 Songs That Shaped Rock and Roll.
