1971 Lynn Anderson – (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden 

Lynn Anderson initially grew up in North Dakota and later moved to a ranch in California. She became an avid horse rider, often competing in local shows. 

Her parents were both songwriters, and Lynn also began performing in music events. When she accompanied her mother to music meetings in Nashville, Chart Records immediately offered Lynn a recording contract in 1966.

She had a series of singles that charted on the Country chart, including four top ten singles during the next four years.

She married songwriter/producer Glenn Sutton in 1968. Thanks to her appearances on the Lawrence Welk Show, Columbia Records signed Lynn to a recording contract in 1970. Glenn began producing her music.

Her third single for the label was a cover of a song written by Joe South and originally recorded by Billy Joe Royal. His version of (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden came out on an album in 1967 that included several other songs that later became hits for other artists.

Lynn insisted on recording Rose Garden and eventually wore down Glenn’s objections to the song. Her single topped the Country chart, reached the top ten on the Hot 100, and peaked at #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart.

Lynn continued to have hits on the Country chart through the eighties, scoring three more number-one singles and nine more that reached the top ten. Her records never returned her to the top forty on the pop chart.

Lynn grew into an accomplished equestrian. When we lived in Nashville, my first wife often competed in local contests against Lynn (whom she claimed was always nice to everybody). Lynn went on to win 16 national championships and nine world championships. 

Lynn suffered complications from a case of pneumonia she contracted on a trip to Italy and died from a heart attack in 2015.
