1966 Righteous Brothers – Go Ahead And Cry
Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield formed the Righteous Brothers in 1962 and had a handful of small hits before signing up with Phil Spector and releasing one of the most acclaimed singles of all time (You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling).
The duo left Phil and Bill began producing singles on his own, including (You’re My) Soul and Inspiration in 1966. Bill also produced their next album after that hit, Go Ahead And Cry. He also wrote the title song from the album, which they released as a single.
Perhaps the strange intro in the song hurt its performance on the Hot 100, where it stalled at #30. It would be eight years before the duo reached the top forty again.
Bill left the group in early 1968 to pursue a solo career. He landed a few songs on the Hot 100 but was unable to return to the top forty on his own.
Bobby recruited Jimmy Walker to replace Bill (Jimmy had been the drummer and one singer for the Knickerbockers, who had a hit with Lies in 1965). They recorded an album and released a few unsuccessful singles and toured until they split up in 1971.
Bill and Bobby reunited in 1974. Alan O’Day wrote the song Rock And Roll Heaven, which they recorded and released as a single. Their record reached #3 on the Hot 100 and briefly reignited their career. Alan later had his own number one hit in 1977 with another song he wrote, Undercover Angel.
