1965 Peter, Paul and Mary – For Lovin’ Me

1965 Peter, Paul and Mary – For Lovin’ Me

1964 was a year of change. The British Invasion began, and many American acts saw their careers fade away. Peter, Paul and Mary were no exception. In 1963, the group had two top ten singles with covers of songs written by Bob Dylan. The next year they released The Times They Are A-Changin’ and their single didn’t even reach the Hot 100.

For their next single in 1965, the group recorded a song by a young, new Canadian singer/songwriter who had yet to reach the US charts: Gordon Lightfoot. For Lovin’ Me may have reached #5 on the Adult Contemporary chart, but the single peaked at only #30 on the Hot 100.

Their next seven singles did not perform well at all in the US. Ironically, they did have five more top forty singles in the UK during the next two years. In 1967, Paul co-wrote I Dig Rock And Roll Music. That song again put them back into the top ten on the Hot 100.
