1976 Helen Reddy – Somewhere In The Night
The first song that Richard Kerr and lyricist Will Jennings wrote together was Somewhere In The Night. The song attracted a great deal of attention. In 1975, Batdorf and Rodney, Yvonne Elliman, Helen Reddy, and Kim Carnes all recorded the song.
The song first charted in October, when Batdorf and Rodney’s version peaked at #69.
In December, Helen released her single of the song and did much better. In early 1976, her version reached #19 on the Hot 100. The single did even better on the Adult Contemporary chart, where it peaked at #2.
The song got a second shot as success when Barry Manilow released the song as the b-side of the single Copacabana in 1978. The single became a double-sided hit, eventually peaking at #9 on the Hot 100 in early 1979.
